How To Choose The Best Font For Your Design

How To Choose The Best Font
For Your Design

Font is a very important aspect of design. The font you choose can make or break your design and so it is necessary to pick a typeface that compliments your look. Choosing the right font for your design can be hard so we at Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing have come up with a few tips to help pick the right one for you!

1. Goal

What is the goal of your design? What you are promoting is a good factor in choosing a typeface. Are you selling a product, promoting a business, or advertising an event? Design for a festival differs from design for a corporate event, so the fonts you choose to compose your design can help to achieve your goal and draw in the proper audience. Knowing your audience and region also helps a lot with choosing your font. Are you in a region that’s full of creatives? If so, an original and unique type can help you stand out and draw the crowd you need. Are you in an area that’s full of corporate professionals? If you are, then a very clean and sleek type will most likely fit well with your design goal.

2. Feel

The feel of your design goes hand in hand with the goal of your design. Are you trying to be fun and exciting or serious and professional? There are thousands of fonts online that we can help you choose from that will go with the overall feel of your design. Font styles range from very professional and clean cut serif fonts all the way to illustration-inspired types. If you find a font that you like but it isn’t the exact way you want it, our designers can help and tweak it up to your exact needs. Whatever the look you are going for, there is a font that will definitely go well with it!

3. Type of Printing

The type of printing you choose can also be a deciding factor in what font you use. Business card designs or small patches would sometimes need simpler type design than a poster or t-shirt because of the smaller canvas size. On the other hand, large posters will typically need bigger fonts because smaller and tightly set font could get lost in a large design.

4. Get Feedback

Feedback is the most important part of choosing a font. With the multitude of fonts available for you to use, it may be hard for you to narrow your choice down to one exact font. Once you’ve picked out a few options it is really good to get feedback from people you know or a small group of people that fall into your target audience. Getting an opinion from them can help you choose the exact font that will enhance your design and send the right message.

Whatever type of font you need, Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing is here to help you choose and design the right font for your design!

How To Keep Your Shirts From Shrinking

How To Keep Your Shirts From Shrinking

Isn’t it frustrating when you get a great, comfy shirt that fits perfectly but once it comes time to wash it it shrinks? We hate it too! A frustrating thing about shirts is that if we don’t care for it properly, they can oftentimes shrink and then we are left frantically googling the best possible way to stretch it back out. At Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing we don’t want you to go through the frustrations of a shirt that’s been shrunk, so we’re here to help with some of our own advice.

In order to prevent shrink one must know the types of fabrics that shrink, pre-shrunk products, fabric blends that have minimal shrink and proper washing for minimal shrinkage. Shrinking occurs to a shirt if it is not properly washed and dried. Some of our other clothing items tend to not shrink no matter what cycle and settings we put them on. However, shrinking is commonly found in plain t-shirts. So how can you avoid or prevent shrink? Let’s keep reading for a few tips on avoiding shrink.

The Best Shirts for Minimal Shrink

How much your shirt shrinks first depends on the type of fabric it is. 100% Cotton shirts will always shrink. If you want to avoid an ill-fitting shirt, sizing up would be recommended. If you are not interested in sizing up your shirts we do recommend getting a blended shirt. We carry dual-blend and tri-blend t-shirts. These t-shirts are the softest fabric and since it is blended, shrinking is minimal to none. Our very own ASP tee is one of the shirts we would recommend, it is a dual blend shirt made of ringspun cotton and polyester. Another popular choice would be the Anvil 6750. This is a tri-blend shirt consisting of a 50/25/25 blend of polyester, combed ringspun cotton, and rayon. This shirt also already comes pre-shrunk so you won’t have to worry about the fit changing after washing it. This leads to our next topic of discussion, pre-shrunk options.

Looking Out For Pre-Shrunk Options

When looking for the perfect shirt, one additional thing to consider is if it is pre-shrunk. Most brands offer pre-shrunk options of their shirts. Pre-shrunk means that the shirt has already been shrunk and will not shrink anymore when you wash it, so there are no surprises when you pull it out of the dryer. The fit of the shirt you receive is what you get so there is no reason to worry about sizes running small. Pre-shrunk is a great option to look out for especially when purchasing a 100% cotton shirt. Some popular options we carry in our shop include the Hanes SL04 and the Fruit of the Loom 3930R. Both of these shirts are in the cost-effective range since they are 100% cotton and come pre-shrunk so you won’t have to worry about shrink!

Avoiding Shrink in the Wash

Now that we’ve already given our advice on what to look out for before you get a shirt, we want to make sure that the shirts you already own are covered. This last piece of advice we want to offer are proper settings when washing your shirt. The main reason why cotton shirts shrink in the wash is because of heat. Although your other clothing withstands the heat of the water in the washer and dryer, cotton is greatly affected by heat. To avoid your shirts from shrinking, make sure to wash your shirts on a cold cycle and dry them on low. This method of washing will ensure minimal to no shrink for your shirts and will help them last longer! If you want to talk to us more about the best shirt for you order, come visit us at our print shop off Patton Avenue or give us a call at 828-738-5190.

Direct to Garment vs. Screen Printing

Direct to Garment vs. Screen Printing

Among the many services we provide at Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing, some of the most fun services we offer here is t-shirt printing. From this we have two methods of printing, screen printing and direct-to-garment. But what many clients may ask is, what is the difference between screen printing and direct-to-garment? These two printing methods are both very popular methods of printing design onto fabric. However they are both very different in their processes. At Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing we offer both services to you at your convenience. To help you decide which is the best route for you let’s first take a look into what each method calls for.

Direct to garment printing is a shirt printing method that involves a digital printer and can apply multiple colors at once. A special ink is used for the digital printer in order for the fibers of a garment to absorb the color. The benefits of direct-to-garment is the versatility in color options and no minimums. That means we can do as little as 1 t-shirt with a ton of colors. Since colors are not applied one at a time like traditional screen printing, this allows for a wide range of colors to be used on your design and also allows for the use of photographs for your prints. Since direct-to-garment is like printing with a digital printer, more detail and depth can be used in a design compared to screen printing. The direct-to-garment printer we use is the Epson F2000 which allows us to print large t-shirt designs up to 16”x20”. It works best with 100% cotton blend shirts and also 50/50 blend shirts and has precision dot control for a more clear and sharp image. The Epson F2000 also has a print resolution of up to 1440×720 for color prints and 1440×1440 for white prints. It also allows us to view your print job while it is printing so we can make sure that it looks exactly how you want it.

Screen printing is a method of printing where ink is pushed through a silk screen and a squeegee is dragged across the screen to help pull the ink back and push it down to the fabric. Before printing onto a garment a screen must be made. Screen printing is different from direct-to-garment because there is no digital printer that applies the ink onto the fabric. A screen is made in order to place a design onto a shirt. For certain designs, multiple screens are required to apply different colors. Since designs are applied manually instead of digitally, there is more versatility to design placement on your shirt or fabric. With screen printing, details cannot reach the capacity that a digital printer can get to with images like photographs. Designs that work best with screen printing are those that require basic shapes or illustrated images. However with screen printing, designs last longer and can withstand machine washes much longer since the ink is heat dried.

When taking in the factor of pricing, it all depends on the size of your order. Direct-to-garment printing is more cost-effective for small orders since there is no setup time required and it does not require a big up front investment. Direct-to-garment isn’t recommended, however, as an order becomes larger lets say more than 30 – 100 pieces. Each job is different so we would look at the art, placements and colors to determine which method will be best for each job. Screen-printing is more cost-effective for larger orders and pretty common in wholesale printing. With screen printing, the larger the order the better the discount you get per shirt! However, regardless of the size of your order, large or small orders, Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing is here to help you choose the right method. Stop by our print shop off Patton Avenue so we can talk more about the right print method that suits your design and needs!

Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing offers two types of t-shirt printing methods: screen printing and direct-to-garment. For small print jobs, direct-to-garment is the cost effective route. This method uses a digital printer that applies a special ink directly onto your t-shirts. For large print jobs screen printing is your best route. This is a more traditional way of printing that involves the use of a silk screen and calls for ink to be pushed through the screen and onto the fabric. One additional thing that Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing also offers is live screen printing.

We are one of the only screen printing companies in the region that offers live screen printing. With live screen printing we bring our local Asheville print shop to you so you can see the magic of your design come to life from start to finish. We have special equipment in our shop that allows us to bring our screen printing materials and machines anywhere to live print in front of an audience. This allows us to be able to get our customers further involved in the creation of their t-shirt design. Below is a little look into our typical setup for live screen printing.

Our business with live screen printing has typically found us at local festivals and breweries, but that’s not all that we do. We can bring live screen printing to school events, birthday parties, weddings, and so much more! Have a school homecoming festival coming up? We can live screen print your school logo or mascot in your school’s colors for all your students and alumni to enjoy!

You can come in and talk with our artists to help create a design that suits your taste and needs. After that we make a screen, or screens, of your design to bring to your event. For your event we can offer up to 3-4 colors. Your guests will then have the freedom to pick from the provided colors what they want on their t-shirt and we’ll have it printed and ready for them to wear on the spot. Live screen printing is the perfect way to add a fun and unique element to any occasion. It gets your guests involved and introduces them into the world of screen printing while also dishing out awesome t-shirts for them to take home and remember the day!

Car and Trailer Wraps in Asheville, North Carolina

Car and Trailer Wraps in Asheville, North Carolina

Why consider wrapping your car, truck or van?
The real question is why not?

When trying to promote your brand, this is one of the best ways to ensure visibility. You’re already driving everyday, why not show off your logo and brand at the same time? Essentially, think of your car as a moving billboard. The more you drive, the more exposure you have for your business. It also shows the world you’re serious about your brand, with a level of quality and professionalism that can’t be beat.

Overall, it is a proven return of investment.

Before you wrap your vehicle, ask yourself these questions.

Things to consider:
Is your vehicle reliable?
Does it have good mileage?
No dings and/or damage?

After you’ve discovered your vehicle is a perfect candidate for car or trailer wrap, you can decide between a couple of options depending on your goals. Check out the pros and cons of a partial wrap and full wrap below:

PARTIAL vs FULL WRAP

Partial

A more budget friendly option. It saves money and can work if the color of your car already matches your branding. However, if the color of your car doesn’t match, there is a risk of clashing with the wrap itself. It can look great on just the back of the vehicle or just the side doors and windows. Check out the pictures below showing some examples.

Full

You love your brand and want to completely show it off. A full wrap especially works great for larger vehicles and trailers. Food trucks and vans in particular will get a huge amount of exposure with a full wrap. That being said, no matter the size of your vehicle a full wrap will give you the most bang for your buck. Remember that moving billboard we mentioned earlier? This is what we’re talking about. Your vehicle will essentially become your brand, and fully represent who you are no matter where you go. Think of the exposure at all sorts of events including festivals, concerts, competitions etc.

Check out some pictures of fully wrapped vehicle below:

Here at Asheville Print Shop & Screen Printing, we’re a one stop print shop. We can promote your brand in a hundred different ways including but not limited to t-shirts, stickers, hats, mugs, ponchos…even personalized lighters. Seriously, we do it all. However, if you want the world to see your brand in a way that’s completely unique, it’s time to wrap your vehicle. Come into the shop today for a quote! We’re here to help.

The Best Hat For Your Brand or Business

The Best Hat For Your Brand or Business

Hats can come in all shapes and sizes…from the classic trucker, snuggly beanies, and even the dad hat, all of these can be a fashionable way to rep your brand. Below are the ways you can do exactly that, keeping in mind what you can get for the quality as well as the price.

Screenprinting

Love it or hate it. We try not to do more than a 1 color screen print, but as you can see in the picture above, 2 colors are possible. The downside is that your logo won’t be as durable over time compared to a patch. However, this option will be the most cost effective, and works the best on our soft foam trucker hat. Check out one of our most options in that style: VC700

Embroidery

This is more of the classical look for hats. It does require converting the logo into a thread count (think pixels to threads), so there is an extra digitization fee. However, your logo will feel like it’s a permanent part of the hat, as you can see in the picture above. Because it’s stitched in it can create some interesting line work. Check out a popular hat option for embroidery here.

Woven Labels

Woven labels are a premium choice. They not only have a nicer finish, but they work well on hats (those snuggly beanies especially), and also on sleeves and bottom collars. They are hand sewn by our own seamstress, and customers will especially appreciate the look and feel of these labels. They will bring the retail value of the hat way up. Here is a popular beanie option that would love a woven label to accessorize it.

Patches

If you want your brand front and center with a soft feel and quality finish, patches are the choice for you. We have the option of a woven patch, a supple and flexible way to attach the design on the hat of your choice. These are also hand sewn by our seamstress, and will be completely retail ready when you pick them up. Because the quality of the patch is so high, the value of the hat itself goes way up as well. Not only can you sell these at a much higher price, your customers won’t be able to buy them fast enough. Here is an option that would work great with a patch.

All of our favorite hats are listed below, varying between the trucker, snapback, dad hat (classic baseball), and beanie. Want to find out more about our hats and which ones work well for your brand? Send us an inquiry and we’ll be sure to provide all the info you need. Remember, we’re a one stop shop and hats are only the tip of the iceberg. threshold-7

Business Spotlight – Threshold Provisions

Threshold Provisions was founded in 2012 by Diane Hutt & myself, Josh Mitchell. We had grown tired of the options that were available on the market for tasty & delicious energy bars, so we started making our own years ago. We knew we had something special and worthwhile of sharing with our community. The flavor profile grew into four different options and we added wild Alaskan salmon jerky to the growing line of provisions

What should people know about Threshold Provisions?
People should know that in our minds, this is way beyond just nuts, fruit, & seeds. This is about creating real food that is a source of balanced nutrition without any bullsh*t or fillers. We love that people from all walks in life feel the heart and soul we’ve put into creating something special.

Tell us a little about yourself and why you started TP?
Diane & I spend more time than what is healthy for small business owners, in remote areas of the world. Alaska & Antarctica are the primary arenas that we travel to on a semi annual basis. We work as commercial salmon fisher(wo)men as well as for the US Antarctic Program supporting NSF funded scientific research. Being away from home with limited provisions is what created the need for our own source of healthy nutrition on the go.

Whats your background?
My background is in historic home renovations and commercial fishing in Alaska. Diane’s background in biology, fine arts, AK fishing, & Antarctic science support.

How did you end up in Asheville?
Diane was born and raised here. I moved here a decade ago because I’m in love with WNC. I grew up in NC and would come to these mountains as a kid with my family. It’s always been a special place in which my fondness has only grown the more I’ve been away.

You seem to work a lot in the active/outdoor community tell us how you landed there.
Working outdoors has always been the natural path for me to take in life. Extreme environments are a source of inspiration and a space in which we find gratitude for the small things we take for granted in our home life. As mountain athletes, our connection to the outdoor community has come as a result of our enjoyment of play, friends, & nature.

Why should people know about Threshold Provisions?
What we offer to our community, our friends, & family is genuine. Where we lack as entrepreneurs, we excel as caring, quality people that strive to do what’s right for ourselves and those around us. The food system is broken in our nation which is a direct result of why America is so unhealthy. We want to be part of the mindset that is gaining momentum, in which people are consciously choosing high quality and integrity of the food that they consume.

What is your most popular product?
Our most popular product is definitely our threshold bars. We sell many more of them than our salmon jerky because of the price point. That being said, we still move a respectable amount of salmon jerky because it’s a touch of the magic that only Alaska can provide.

Whats next? Where is Threshold going?
There in lies the million dollar question. We are sorting through different avenues of growth. With the desire to create jobs in our area versus farming work out, we are envisioning the sustainable direction to take the business to the next level. What that looks like is being determined over the next few months.

Where can people learn more?
If you’ve read all of this and still want to know more, then by all means, please check out our website at www.thresholdpro.com
